Oh, Haiti Design Co. We could go on and on, and our customers could go on and on. People stop us in the street and ask us "where and what" about our Haiti Design Co. always! Chandler, the head designer and founder, is a massive talent and a mission-driven human. We adore their consciously produced leather goods and jewelry, and can't keep them in stock.

Their model goes well beyond fair trade and fair working conditions. See their "about" page excerpt below for now, and expect much, much more to come with our partnership with this powerhouse organization.

Little by little our small workshop has grown and evolved into a training and production center employing over 150 people within our workshop and HDC partner branches. Over the years, HDC has collaborated with many talented designers that have come to Haiti and led workshops to train teams in new and better production techniques. These collaborations have been the foundations for many of the teams we are able to employ today.""HAITI DESIGN CO WAS FOUNDED IN 2014 WITH THE GOAL TO BRING ABOUT SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH DESIGN, TRAINING, AND JOB CREATION.
OUR MANTRA AROUND THE WORKSHOP IS "MEN ANPIL, CHAY PA LOU". THIS IS AN OLD HAITIAN PROVERB MEANING "MANY HANDS MAKE THE LOAD LIGHT".
WE BELIEVE THAT THERE IS COMMONALITY BETWEEN THE DESIGNER, MAKER, AND CONSUMER, AND THAT WHEN WORKING TOGETHER WE CAN HELP LIGHTEN EACH OTHER'S LOAD AND BRING ABOUT LASTING POSITIVE IMPACT.

Let's read! The Remake Seattle Community is joining forces with The Cura Co. again this summer to talk about the impacts of climate change, focusing on the things we love to wear and the people who make them. We will be reading Climate Optimism by Zahra Biabani and, along the way, holding space for intimate conversations with local makers. Sign up for the book club here and find a copy in-store at the front desk of Elliott Bay Book Company for 10% off.
